Canada is still testing experimental COVID vaccines on people in 2026. McMaster University’s AeroVax is an inhaled adenoviral vector vaccine designed to deliver the product directly into the lungs. Phase 2 trials are reportedly underway in Hamilton, Ottawa and Halifax. To qualify, participants must have already received at least three mRNA COVID vaccine doses. The trial involves healthy adults receiving either the inhaled vaccine or a saline placebo. Researchers collect blood samples and, in some cases, perform bronchoscopies to study the immune response deep within the airways. Years later, this research is still publicly funded and recruiting people who have already received multiple COVID vaccine doses. Now, researchers are investigating another experimental approach: delivering a vaccine through inhalation to study how the immune system responds in the lungs.
